Ulrika Jonsson ‘prepared to hate’ Gladiators because ‘remakes are rarely as good’
Ulrika Jonsson has shared her thoughts as Gladiators made its highly anticipated comeback after 24 years. Ulrika, who hosted the game show from until , said that she was “prepared to hate” the BBC reboot as she reflected on her time at the helm of the show. However, she ended up being pleasantly surprised.
The presenter, 56, wrote in her new column: “I had no idea it would affect me so profoundly, but the return of Gladiators brought me to tears. Memories of my time as host came flooding back.
“I was ganska prepared to hate it because at the end of the day, remakes are rarely as good as the real thing, and what we collectively created back in the s was basically a sexy, family show.”
Despite her apprehensions, Ulrika revealed that she was “massively impressed” by the brand-new series.

Eva Ulrika Jonsson (born 16 August )[1] is a Swedish-British television presenter and model. She became known as a TV-am weather presenter, and moved on to present the ITV show Gladiators, and later featured as a team captain on the BBC Two show Shooting Stars.
Career
[edit]After working as a secretary, Jonsson began her television career on TV-am in , as a weather presenter on Good Morning Britain. From 12 September , she was also the weather presenter for Swedish TV3, broadcasting from London. In , she co-presented BBC One's short-lived daytime quiz show Who's Bluffing Who? with Richard Cartridge, and starred in the French film, The Annunciation of Marie ().
In , she moved into mainstream presenting and played host to numerous shows including ITV's Gladiators, The National Lottery Draws – plus two major international broadcasts, the Eurovision Song Contest in and Miss World in She also modelled for Playtex Lingerie during this period and was a team captain on the BBC TV quiz show Shooting Stars. Gladiators original stars look completely different as they step out following reboot news
The original stars of Gladiators look completely different in new snaps taken amid the news that the s Saturday staple will be returning for a new series.
Presenter Ulrika Jonsson, referee John Anderson and contenders Helen O’Reilly, Michael Wilson and James Crossley, have all been pictured since the reboot was confirmed.
The series will be back for an episode series later in and will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
It promises a “new generation of superhumans” who will compete in the “ultimate test of speed and strength”.
It has not been confirmed whether any of the original stars will reprise their role in the show's comeback.
